Richard Lee McDonald, 86, of Rantoul, passed away on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born July 30, 1937 in Charlestown, W.Va., a son of Roy L. and Maebelle (Rutherford) McDonald. He married Joan Betty Barnes on March 22, 1958. She preceded him in death on Nov. 27, 2016.
He is survived by two daughters, Sharon McDonald of Rantoul and Deborah McDonald of Rantoul; a brother Donald (Anne) Rutherford of Va.; a niece, Annie (Chris Rhodes) McDonald of Baltimore, Md.; two granddaughters, Lisa (Michael) and Jenny; nine great-grandchildren; and ten great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Mercer and a brother, Charles McDonald.
Richard “Mac” loved his country and was proud to serve for 20 years in the U.S. Air Force including the Vietnam War. He later retired from Civil Service.
He loved watching football, especially the Baltimore Ravens and the Illini. He also enjoyed flowers and tending to them. Most of all he LOVED his family, hugs and handshakes from his grandchildren; made his day.
A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Lux Memorial Chapel, 1551 E. Grove, Rantoul. Burial will follow in Danville National Cemetery, 1900 E Main St, Danville.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service, also at Lux Memorial Chapel.
